Misc. Notes
What do we know for certain?
on DC name is Thomas M Watkins. OBIT is also Thos M Watkins
Obit has correct children names, and says born in Merthyr Tydvil, Wales and 5 sisters and 1 brother still in Wales. Also IMM 34 yrs ago (abt 1881)

on DC son Watty Watkins reported father was b 1855 Wales, his father Watkin Watkins. But mother’s name is “Windolin James” (Jones?) a mistake? His own mother & father’s name?
The other Thomas Watkins (d1908) DC mother listed Ann Morgan - could David Price’s book be wrong? could that info have come from the wrong DC? but HIS father was listed as Thomas Watkins.

perhaps Naturalization papers will shed a clue!

To Compete at Lake Ariel
A Choir of Splendid Timbre Organized For That Purpose
“The Philharmonic Choral society to complete at Lake Ariel on 4th of July for the $300 prize for the best rendition of “O Father Whoses Almight Power” from Handel’s Judas Maccabeus, is one of the finest aggregation of singers that has been banded together here for a long time. The conductor of the choir Mr Thomas M Watkins is known to every musician of prominence in the county. He was the unanimous choice of the society for that position and was selected on true merit. Mr Watkins is an excellent musician and has had a decade or more experience as a conductor....”

WEST SIDE POLITICS
Councilman Candidates Become Active
“In the 15th ward the contest for supremacy at the approaching caucus is also waxing warm. Thise having thus far announced themselves as candidates for Mr Davis’ seat in the lower branch are Messrs. Ebenezer P Davies of Eynon street, Joseph Oliver of Hampton St, Thomas M Watkins of the latter thoroughfare, and Mr T Ellsworth Davies. Each of the above are capable men and they will make an interesting fight.”

“In describing the political contest in the 15th Ward in yesterday morning’s issue, the writer unintentionally ommitted the name of one of the candidates for common council, Mr Thomas M Watkins of Hampton Street. Mr Watkins is a prominant merchant of South Main Avenue, and has been in the field from the start, and has since done considerable work in his own behalf. He told a Republican reporter yesterday that he will continue in the race until the polls close on Tuesday next.”

“The performance of the cantata “Grandpa’s Visit” made such a favorable impression on the vast audience in attendance in the WElsh Baptist Church on Thanksgiving evening that many requests have been made to the committee for its reproduction. For the benefit if those who desire to witness this cantata by the large band of small children, it has been decided to repeat the work on Wednesday the 11th inst in the same place. The choral work and most of the solos are rendered by children whose ages range between 6 and 10 yrs and the effect is most delightful and inspiring. Mr Thomas M Watkins, the conductor, has for many months concentrated his efforts in training the children and has every reason to be proud of the result.”

INDIGNANT VOTERS
Talk of an Independent Candidate in the 15th Ward
“In all probability the voters of the 15th ward will place an independent ticket in the field at the spring election against Richard Thomas, who won over the 2 other Republican candidates by 2 votes at Saturday’s primaries. There is consideable indignation expresses over Staurday’s results, as it is claimed that the vigilants in the 2 districts of the ward indulged in an illegal usage of ballots. It is further alleged that the same committees conducting the primaries arranged the count so as to favor Mr Thomas’ selection, against which the friends of Mr Thomas M Watkins, one of the defeated candidates, worked diligently and with great force.....
“A Republican reporter, conversing with Mr Watkins last evening, learned that the latter was in the hands of his friends and that he would doubtlessly be an independent candidate....”

A lively Fight Among Democrats of the 3rd Ward -- 3 Candidates Nominated in the 15th Ward
“There is also a lively 3 corneres fight in the 15th ward caused by the appearance of 2 Republicans ans a Democrat. Mr Richard Thomas is the regular Republican nominee but Mr Thomas M Watkins claims that he received a majority of the votes cast and thereupon filed nomination papers as an independent candidate.
“Mr John Wagner Sr is the Democratic candidate. The ward is strongly Republican, but it is feared that Mr Watkins will draw down Mr Thomas’s vote to such an extent as to allow the Democratic nominee to be elected.”

10 City Fathers will Resign on Thursday Night - The Other 15 will be Given Until MOnday Next to decide
Ther is no longer any doubt as to the result of the crusade directed by the Municipal League against council-manic bribery. Court on Monday permitted a continuance of the cases against 10 city fathers and one ex-councilman in order to give the former and opportunity to resign their seats at a special meeting on Thirsday next and thus fulfill the conditions demanded by the Municipal League..... These conditions are:

3 To pay the sum of $200 to be distributed between the 4 charitable institutions named
....The 4 institutions which will be benefited by the restitution money will the Lackawanna Hospital, the Hahnemann Hospital, the Home for the Friendless, and ST Joseph’s Foundling Hime.
