OBIT The Scranton Republican, Saturday Morning, June 6 1896, pg5, column 2,
“Father Killed, Son Hurt - Sad Accident at No.2 Shaft of the Storr’s Mine Yesterday Morning - A Polander Injured
One of the saddest accidents that ever occurred in Priceburg took place yesterday morning at No.2 shaft ot the Storr’s mine. There being no work at the colliery yesterday on account of pay day, Mr Henry Oakey thought it would be advantageous to blast some top rock.
So, accompanied by his son John and a Polish laborer, he went into the mines and began work. They had been engaged in the chamber about two hours when, without the least warning, about two tons of rock fell on them, killing Mr. Oaky and seriously injuring his son. The Polander fortunately escaped serious injury, but he was badly frightened. On examining Mr Oaky’s body it was found that his neck and both legs had been broken.
The deceased was about 46 years old and a well-to-do miner, and the community is shocked by his sad death. He is survived by six children, four boys and two girls.
The son’s injuries were not fatal and he is resting quietly. The community in general sympathize with Mrs Oaky in the great affliction. The funeral announcement will appear later.”
