Albert J. LaVerne of West Scranton died Friday at Community Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Hebebrand, in 1980, and his second wife, the former Margaret McDonnell Kingsley, in 1999.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Jessie and Alice LaVerne, he was a retired store manager for Acme supermarkets, where he had been employed for 33 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific aboard the USS Randolph, and the Korean War, serving aboard the USS Butternut. After completing his active duty, he continued his military service in the U.S. Naval Reserve station, first of Dunmore and then Avoca. He retired as a chief petty officer after 40 years of service.
He was a life member of both VFW Post 5937 and American Legion Post 665, Dickson City. He was also a member of the Royal Order of Land-Locked Petty Officers Club, Hyde Park Lodge 339, F&AM; the 20th Ward Social Club; West Side Senior Citizens Center; and the Tauras Club. He was also a member and former trustee of Jackson Street Baptist Church and a former volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Telespond.
Albert loved his family, country and friends.
Suriviving are a daughter, Jane LaVerne, Richmond, Va.; a son, David and wife, Geraldine LaVerne; two grandsons David Jr., and Paul, Dickson City; two stepsons, Donald and Kenneth Kingsley; and a stepdaughter, Diane LoRusso, all of Scranton.
He was also preceded in death by two half-sisters, O’Retta Heisner and Mae Parry.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Davies and Jones Funeral Chapel, Inc., 135 S. Main Ave., with services by the Rev. James Johnson, pastor of the Dickson City Primitive Methodist Church. Internment, Primitive Methodist Cemetery, Dickson City.
Friends may call Monday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
