BOY IS BURIED ALIVE; SAVED BY HEROIC EFFORT
A miraculous escape from death was that of Hugh HUghes, the 10 yr old son of Mr & Mrs Humphrey HUghes of Main street Edwardsville, yesterday.
His condition is stll critical, but physicians say he will recover,
The boy was plying with several of his companions near the Center Street cave-in which occurred last Sanday. Shortly afterward the earth began to crack and give way, all of the boys with the exception of Hugh Highes escaping to a place of safety. Hugh was caught in the slowly falling earth and was carried down into the cave, completely covered.
HIs companions then started an heroic effort to rec=scue him, but not until a passing teamster added his assistance was the near-victim uncovered, about ahalf an hour after the fall.
Badly fightened and suffering from exhaustion and bruises, he was carried to his home, where a physician attended him.
