P06 “Family Matters” by CJR (Charlotte Jupp Rowe?)
“... William and Charlotte Rowe had four sons and three daughters.
“William Henry the oldest son was a physician practicing in London. He died unmarried. Charles Joseph, who went to Canada with his two younger brothers, and from there to Cincinnati, where he died during an epidemic of cholera. He never married.
“Stanhope Sanderson - our father - who was born in London, in a house on Portman Square, and Basil Robert, who married his first cousin Caroline Hamilton and remained on the farm near Orillia, which had been bought by the three brothers.
“ The three daughters remained in England, Frances the eldest married Mr. Haines, Mary Anne and Elizabeth Jane both died unmarried.”
p7 “Family Matters” by CJR (Charlotte Jupp Rowe?)
“... Basil Robert Rowe married his first cousin Caroline Hamilton. They had eight children, six of whom are living in Orillia. Charles Hamilton, the oldest son and Basil Hamilton, live on the farm, Goodwood, frnting n Bass Lake. Stanhope Essington Hamilton, the youngest son died from the kick of a horse. Of the five daughters three Caroline Hamilton (the eldest) Charlotte Frances Hamilton and Elizabeth Hamilton live in Orillia. The youngest Anna Hamilton lives in Penetauguishene. They like to be called the ‘Hamilton Rowes’, that is the daughters. I do not think the sons care. Mary Hamilton died. None of them married. Sophia Hamilton, a sister of Aunt Caroline Rowe, married Paul Darling. She lived a widow with her brother Francis Hamilton on a farm near Orillia. She had two daughters Marian and Sophia. The latter, the only one now living of the four, is the widow of William J Henderson and visits Orillia. “
..... Stanhope Sanderson Rowe emigrated to Canada with his two brothers and lived on Goodwood Farm for three years. They built a log house and took care of themselves "roughing it in the bush."
One of the tales that he used to tell us as children was of going to the village with a yoke of oxen, where a friend Mrs Mulholland asked if they were going to have a Christmas pudding. On his replying that they had no eggs, she gave him some in a small Indian casket or "Mo-cock", which he hung upon his arm. Crossing the frozen surface of the lake on his way home one of the oxen broke through the ice making a large hole into which he had to jump in order to exptricate his team. Telling of this experience on reaching the house he, for the first time, missed the eggs, which he knew must have slipped from his arm into the water. Return-

“ ... Our story dates back even further to 1832 when the Rowe family came over from England to settle at Bass Lake. Basil Rowe, whose farm included the land that is now the Provincial Park, was a stalwart Churchman and a lay member of Synod for thirty years. He was a faithful giver of his tithe (giving a tenth of all he had to God's work), and would even bring every tenth load of wood into town for the poor...”

CHAPTER XI.
SOME HISTORIC FAMILIES.
ADDITIONAL PARTICULARS OF TH E HAMILTON
FAMILY.
A CORRECTION.—In a previous chapter we stated that
Capt. James Matthew Hamilton, the first postmaster of Pene-
tanguishene, was married at Mackinaw by Surgeon David
Mitchell, his father-in-law, who read the ceremony from the
Church of England prayer book, he being a Justice of the
Peace, as there were no clergymen in that region in those
days. We gathered these facts from the diary of the late
Capt. T. G. Anderson published by the Wisconsin Historical
Society, and which statement has been copied by numerous
writers. Miss Charlotte Frances Hamilton Rowe of Orillia,
a grand daughter of Capt. Hamilton,
has kindly furnished us
with some additional particulars and a copy of the following
document transcribed Oct. 19th,1875, from a Book of Records
at Mackinac bearing dates from 1785to i860, viz.: "Michili-
mackinac, 15thNov., 1791.—This day was married by Ed-
ward Charleton, Esquire, Captain in the 5th Regiment of His
Majesty, and Commandant of the Post of Michilimackinac
and Dependencies, before the undersigned Notary and inthe
presence of the subscribing witnesses, Jas.Matthew Hamilton,
Ensign in the said Regiment, to Miss Louise Mitchell, daught-
er of David Mitchell, Esq.,by his lawful wife."

ORIILIA - A large and important village situate on Lake Couchiching,
in the township of Orillia, in a section of country celebrated for its
varied and lovely scenery, and excellent sporting and fishing grounds.
There is a fragment of early history connected with the site of
Orillia which may prove interesting. In the year 1615, the celebrated
Champlain, "the first pioneer," explored the Upper Ottawa passing up
the Mattawan River to Lake Nipissing and thence by the French River to
Lake Manitou or the Georgian Bay and Lake Huron where the exploration
of the adjacent country was continued. At length he reached Cahiague,
the present Orillia, one of the chief lodges of the powerful and warlike
Hurons. Champlain joined this tribe in an expedition against the Iroquois
in which the Hurons were signally defeated, and Champlain himself wounded.
This inaugurated the dreadful war between those tribes which after several
years of almost uninterrupted hostility, resulted in the annihilation of
the Hurons, as a separate tribe; a few of their descendants now occupy the
village of Lorette in the Province of Quebec.
In the year 1831, the British Government made a treaty with the
Ojibways for a village site and at once built a Council Room, an Episcopal
church, a schoolhouse, sixteen log houses, and a much larger and more
substantial one of the same material for the chief's private residence.
The chief William Yellowhead died about seven years ago and is buried in
the English churchyard. The old house is now, after great improvements,
used as the Episcopal parsonage.
In 1838, the whites petitioned for a landing, which was granted, and
the Indians were removed to Rama in Ontario county, where, a church,
schoolhouse and dwellings were provided for them and the entire possess-
ion of Orillia was secured to the whites.
In 1832, the first white settlers arrived. Gerald Alley, Esq. being
the first. In 1836 only six white families resided in the village, viz:
Robert Bailey, Michael Bowers, Jacob Gill, Andrew Moffatt, Neil Morrison
and John Rowe. Robert Bailey, Andrew Moffatt, Michael Bowers, John Harvie
and John O'Connor are the oldest settlers living here now (1872). In the
year 1835 the Post office was established; Gerald Alley, first Post
master, previous to this time, Thomas McCausland carried the mails to
Barrie, a distance of 28 miles. Within the past few years Orillia has
rapidly increased in extent, wealth and population, and its prospects
for the future are even more favorable. Manufacturing establisheds are
springing up and few, if any, towns in Ontario posses better facilities
for this branch of industry. The Northern Muskoka Juction and Midland
railways centre here. Steamers ply to all ports on Lake Simcoe, the
extensive Muskoka Free Grant territory is in the neighborhood, the local
trade extensive, the population enterprising, and the future prosperity
of Orillia is a certanity, and, that is advent as a TOWN, perhaps, a
COUNTY TOWN is not very remote, is equally sure.
Stage communication by Harvie & Midland's line to Bracebridge Rosseau,
Parry Sound and intermediate places, and in winter through to Parry Sound.
Railway connexion with all parts of the country will be opened in the
course of the next year.
Orillia is distant from Barrie 27 miles, Bell Ewart 50, Washago 12,
Gravehurst via Washago by stage 14, Coldwater 14, Midland 19 and Toronto
20. Population 2000.

PART TWO
THE PIONEERS
CHAPT. #11 SOUTH ORILLIA
Three brothers, Charles, Stanhope and Basil R. Rowe, came to Canada aabout the year 1830, They were memebers of a Devonshire family, although immediately from London, Eng. In 1832, Charles, the eldest, came to Orillia and took up land beside Bass Lake for himself and brothers. For a short time, they resided at Holland Landing, but about the date just mentioned, came to Bass Lake. Basil, who was the younger of the three, was 16 or 17 years of age at the time of their arrival in the woods of Bass Lake. Subsequently, both Charles and Stanhope went to the United States, but Basil remained in South Orillia throughout his life. He married a daughter of Captain Hamilton, of Matchedash and Penetanguishene. In the early days of Orilla Township, Mr. Rowe was chosen township clerk, and held the office for a generation or more. His death took place on December 29, 1894.

SETTLERS BEFORE 1837
The Villages
"In solving the question as to who were the real pioneers of Simcoe County, one important event readily furnishes us with a key. The Rebellion of 1837 is a distinct dividing line, in relation to which those who settled before it were the real pioneers of the county, the period to which they belonged standing out by itself, sharp and clear. It is with this period that the contents of this second volume mainly deal, except where it became necessary to comlete the History by introducing such persons and events of the subsequent years as seemed requisite, especially the more prominent of those who took part in the public affairs of the county.
