James Benjamin Bray, 79, most recently of North Garden, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, with his loving wife, Margie, at his side. He lived 45 years with the physical challenges of multiple sclerosis and handled it with a great deal of grace, humor and strength.
He was born at home in Blakely, Pennsylvania, on February 22, 1939, to Benjamin Allison Bray and Audrey Priscilla Buckingham Bray. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard James Bray; and sister, Barbara Bray Larson.
Jim graduated from Keystone Junior College and then Bloomsburg University with a bachelor's degree in education. He later obtained a master's degree in education from West Chester University. He taught junior high school English and History for 35 years. He was Athletic Director of Huntingdon Junior High School for over 12 years and coached three sports. He was a Pennsylvania Mason at Friendship William Lodge #400 F&AM. Jenkintown, Pa. Those who knew him best will remember him for his sharp wit, humorous perspective on life and straight forward manner.
Jim is survived by his wife, Margaret Davis Bray; son, James William Bray; daughter, Dr. Megan Jane Bray; daughter-in-law, Merete Haugaa Bray; son-in-law, Anthony Joseph Antonio; grandsons, Ryan Christopher Antonio and Bryce Parker Antonio; granddaughter, Eline Margaret Haugaa Bray; as well as several wonderful nephews and nieces.
The family will be planning a private graveside service only in the fall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions in James B. Bray's name be made to either one of two organizations, his grandsons' elementary school, since he was a teacher and dedicated his life to education or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, as so many of his close relatives were affected by Type 1 Diabetes. Addresses for donations are as follows, Red Hill Elementary School Parent Teachers Organization, 3901 Red Hill School Road, North Garden, VA 22959, or Central Virginia Chapter of JDRF online or at 1801 Libbie Avenue, Suite 106, Richmond, VA 23226.
